So here's the deal: You get three cars absolutely of your choice. One from America, one from Italy and one from Japan. No international hybrids like an AC Cobra or DeTomaso Pantera. Value of any car cannot exceed $50,000. Your current car(s) will disappear so some of these will have to take on your daily driving duties.
What do you choose?
For me:
1969 Corvette 427/390 horsepower
1969 Maserati Indy
1970 Datsun 240Z

$50,000 new? Or $50,000 current market value?
![]() 05/27/2014 at 19:32 |
|
SVT Raptor
Alfa GTV
RX-7
![]() 05/27/2014 at 19:33 |

'merica: 1970 Dodge Challenger straight six w/ a 413 engine swap (can be done for under $50,000) with the 400 block bore and stroke.
Italy: 2005ish Maserati Quattroporte (barely under $50,000) - would try for a GranTurismo, but I'm not sure you can find one for the price.
Japan: R32 Nissan GT-R

65 Mustang, 72 240Z, 05 Gransport.

I think these cars would all meet the price requirement since I could buy used with some miles to stay at or under $50K:
Newest CTS-V Wagon I could buy for $50K
Lexus IS-F
Ferrari F355 (I know it's expensive to maintain, but the other cars are reliable)
![]() 05/27/2014 at 19:38 |

70s 240Z BRE replica - Other daily driver/hoon-mobile
1978 Trans Am (Pro Touring style) - daily driver (surprisingly practical cars)
70s Maserati Bora (or Merak if I can't find a Bora for cheap enough) - Project/Sunday car
Side note: I'd much rather have the pantera over the Maserati

Shit, um....
Japan: R34 GT-R (probably something balls out like a Spec II Nur)
America, easy: 03-04 cobra
Italy... um.... this is tough since all of italy's good cars are 6 figure cars...: I would say a Ferrari F355. It can fit in the budget if you look hard enough!
![]() 05/27/2014 at 19:40 |

bahahaha enjoy your Fiat 850!

Here's my new answer because I forgot about the IS-F and the 456
Raptor
456
IS-F

Better hope that if you have any other passengers, they can fit in the rear seats of a R34:
I believe this pic is out of a V-spec Nur. The Mustang isn't much more roomy either.

There must be a salvage 4c out there somewhere, right?

I guess we're both rockin F355's.

(track) 1995 Nissan Skyline R33 GT-R (avg price is about 50k$ to import and buy a nice one), stash in Canada for 5 more years
(Jalop) CTS-V wagon with auto, visit GT-R using said wagon
(dd) Fiat 500L (wagon-ish, 4-door, turbo, paddleshift, booyah)

if I have any more than one passenger, they can take their own damn car lol
![]() 05/27/2014 at 19:43 |

USA: 2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302
Italy: 1974 Alfa Romeo Montreal (its right around $50k right now).
Japan: 2008 Infiniti FX45

Oh man you want the 456 even more than the Alfa? Wow. You must really like it then.

Japan: Lexus IS350 F-Sport
Italy: Fiat 500 Abarth Cabrio

Difficult. Probably a Mk2 Corvair Monza, an Alfa Montreal and a Honda S800.
Who cares about practicality when you've got that level of style/weirdness :)

First gen Bronco (you might not be able to do quite that much and keep it under $50k, but some mods would be nice)
Hawk Cars Stratos replica
First gen Celica coupe.

It's 90s looks with a V12 and gated shifter. And it's understated.
Everyone would call you sir.
Women 10 years your senior would want to grab lunch.
If you get this car before you turn 30 you'd be an Oppo hero.
![]() 05/27/2014 at 19:54 |

I mean I'd rather have a broken Ferrari than what, a broken Alfa 156 or some shit?
All Italian cars will break, catch on fire and rust. Make it one that will count.

If you make it happen then you're only allowed to drive it when wearing an Italian suit.
It can be an old and worn Italian suit, that's fine. Just no shorts and flip flops.

FYI, I left a comment with a question for you. I'm heading out, so I'll get back to you tomorrow. Cheers!

I think I could find these 3 in the price range.
1. Raptor (narrowly beating out a Dodge Challenger SRT-8)
2. Ferrari 456
3. A Datsun 310GX 5-door (because I'm a very, very weird guy)
![]() 05/27/2014 at 19:59 |

HAHAHA good point!
They're all going to be expensive pains. At least the Ferrari will be fast and awesome when it is actually running.
It's crazy how the F355 still has decent specs even by today's standards. Good amount of power and still a ton of power per liter.
![]() 05/27/2014 at 20:03 |

it'll also still be a ferrari when its broken
and that gated shifter!
![]() 05/27/2014 at 20:04 |

Dammit!! I can't have my Porsches... :(
2015 Mustang GT(Starts at $32,925)
Any Italian car I want won't be $50k...
Can't think of any Japanese car either... :(
![]() 05/27/2014 at 20:07 |
|
Current price 4,500,000 ¥ for this beauty which is just under $50kUSD
everything else is irrelevant.. so maybe a 4x4 F150 with a canopy to tow this and have room to sleep in. and uhhhhhh are Ferrari 400-412's under $50k yet?
![]() 05/27/2014 at 20:11 |
|
True you can still go in the garage and shift gears! That's worth it right there. Now I want a salvage Ferrari to put in the house.
I can't even decide which Ferraris I would get if I won a million bucks. The F355 would definitely be stick. I would want an F430 stick but I would also want it to be a Scud or 16M. The one easy call is a 599 stick.
![]() 05/27/2014 at 20:12 |

I'd need a 550 maranello at a minimum

I'll help you
You don't have to buy a new car
So think of used Japanese sports cars or sports sedans
And Italian cars from the 90s

I wonder how much the Sultan would want to part with his 456 wagon
![]() 05/27/2014 at 20:22 |

Except it couldn't be just any track. It would need to be a big track with long sweeping turns. And only a select group of people would be allowed to run their cars. James May would be one.

Eh... The only Japanese car I know of that isn't new is a Datsun 240, but I don't know if I want one.
And I can't think of any Italian cars from the 90s. I'll just go ahead and guess Maserati.

AMC Gremlin
Datsun 240z
Maserati Bi-turbo

But what about the money I'm saving for these? :(
![]() 05/27/2014 at 21:19 |

You've just stumbled upon the dilemma that eventually dogs all Porsche fans!
Porsches are more reliable and more usable (in most cases at least). And they're generally cheaper so you can have moar of them.
But Ferraris can also be purchased and they are more exotic and appreciate faster (in most cases at least).
But we all have only a certain amount of monies. So do you buy Porsches and see your assets slowly go up in value while maintenance costs are held down? Or do you put all your monies into one near classic Ferrari and endure the high cost of parts while you watch the value go up steadily and then maybe go through the roof if you're lucky?

![]() 05/27/2014 at 21:57 |
|
America: 69 mustang Mach 1 since it's just so badass
Italy: Ferrari 308 gts because gorgeous convertible Ferrari.
Japan: Honda NSX you can still get one for under 50,000 and reliable mid-engined goodness.
![]() 05/27/2014 at 22:57 |
|
1969 Mustang
2004+ LP-550-2 Gallardo Spyder MT
NSX
![]() 05/27/2014 at 22:59 |
|
Wait, I guess I couldn't get that Gallardo for under 50k, right ? Well... If not, then I'd probably go for some older convertible Ferrari with an MT... geez, is that even possible... ? :D
![]() 05/28/2014 at 01:16 |
|
A 993/964? a 930 turbo flatnose? Or a 69 911t? Or a 997.2? Or a that gorgeous 959 I saw at cars and coffee, oh oh a 997.2 gt3 RS 4.0, mmm an original 356 1600 super speedster. I may have gone too far on this one.
Can you tell I'm a porsche fan?
![]() 05/28/2014 at 01:20 |
|
All fantastic options. But I've narrowed it down to 4.
993, 964, 3.2 Carrera or a 997. With the 993, 964 and 997 being either a C2 or C2S. Now I just gotta pick from these.
![]() 05/28/2014 at 01:25 |
|
I would choose a 997 or a 964 both beautiful cars fantastic drivers and can currently be found on the cheaper side. I so say though the 3.2 Carrera is an awfully tempting choice.
![]() 05/28/2014 at 01:33 |
|
I'm interested as to why you didn't choose a 993? While some are very expensive, I've found ones from $25-35k which honestly isn't that bad.
Other than that, I'm thinking of the first 911 I want to buy when I get out of college and I want it to be a DD all year round, including winter. I don't need all the features and creature comforts of today, just a radio, AC and heating, ABS and other simple things would do. 3.2 Carreras don't have ABS but it'd be the cheapest way to go. 964 improves on the 3.2 and then some, and the 997 is a whole different car. So many choices.
![]() 05/28/2014 at 01:47 |
|
I'm just not the biggest fan of the 993 in the first place and the cost just seems extravagant to me even at 25-30k which while a great deal feel wouldn't last long before rapidly rising due to maintenance charges. The 3.2 Carrera is definitely my favorite of the bunch and probably the best investment as a whole since it's not as complicated which means you can do more work yourself ANSI personally think the 3.2 Carrera will shortly be rapidly increasing in value. The 964 is as you say the 3.2 improved and is also quite nice. The 997 is just such an incredible machine and would be imminently doable as a dd if not for the cost of any Porsche out of warranty and the complexities to work on.
![]() 05/28/2014 at 01:58 |
|
I hope the 3.2 doesn't go up in value significantly for another couple years or so, I need to be able to afford one! :(
![]() 05/28/2014 at 02:04 |
|
Completely agree I'm actually sad about their increasing value since it will make it so much harder for me to get one in a couple years (well maybe more than a few). but it does mean that my cars value gas gone up by association which is quite nice.
![]() 05/28/2014 at 02:05 |

And in anticipation of taking my dad's car to the shop tomorrow.
You sound like you've got yourself a 911 in your garage.
![]() 05/28/2014 at 02:11 |
|
hah I wish just a lowly 944.
![]() 05/28/2014 at 02:12 |
|
what's your dads car again a 70 something?
![]() 05/28/2014 at 02:17 |
|
Not true! A 944 is an excellent handling sports car. Sure it doesn't make all the power a 911 makes(provided that 911 isn't a base '74-77, and or you have a 944S2 or Turbo or Turbo S) but they're still very fun cars and great for the track I've been told. I got to ride in one last month and regretted not being able to pick up my uncles 85.5. A 944 is still a very special car in this world IMO. He's still got it though and I'm hoping to see it in a couple months.

Oh I wasn't hating on my baby in fact I love her and she's a hell of a fun car but still is just missing that Porsche magic that 911s have.
![]() 05/28/2014 at 02:22 |

Ooh pretty lucky you get to drive it and that your dad has taste. My dad who actually likes cars just went out and bought a prius.
![]() 05/28/2014 at 02:24 |

I spotted this today and damn near cried about how pretty it was really liked the ruf wheels and upgrades. Bonus blue 944 in the background that belongs to my friend.
![]() 05/28/2014 at 02:28 |
|
What a gorgeous 964 Turbo, I've never had the privilege of seeing a 964 in person before. It's the last generation of 911 I have yet to get up close to actually, that and a 901. It's pictures like this that make me want a 964 more. It's just something about that rear reflector/light setup and the fact that it's all red. :)
![]() 05/28/2014 at 02:29 |
|
I'm so sorry for your dad. What compelled him to do that and what was his previous car?
Luckily, my dad won't touch a Toyota with a stick so I'm good in that department. ;)
![]() 05/28/2014 at 02:35 |

oh believe me I know how pretty that is i spent a good 15 minutes appreciating it, the whale tale, tasteful modifications, and convertible top just make it look so nice.
![]() 05/28/2014 at 02:37 |

Oh I'm jealous and to be honest I'm not sure exactly what came over him maybe a reverse midlife crisis, I can only assume that as he saw all of his friends selling theirs for something more exciting he felt like oh I need to get me one of those. That's exactly what I need.
![]() 05/28/2014 at 02:39 |

Never have I heard Prius coincide with the word "exciting"....Fascinating haha. :)
Maybe more fun than I think it is? Nah that's impossible! He was suppose to go out and buy a 997 for a proper mid-life crisis. :p
![]() 05/28/2014 at 02:44 |
|
No worries, this happens every night. :)
But with your permission, I will gladly try to sleep. I will be hopefully making a post(s) throughout the day in regards to the car and getting underneath it for once and there may be a driving video too. :)
But for now, good night/morning!
![]() 05/28/2014 at 09:26 |

I have but only when coinciding with not or trade for. I can't tell you how much fun it is since I refuse yo get in it but he was supposed to go out and get a proper mid life crisis car in fact I've been waiting 5 years for him to do that.
![]() 05/28/2014 at 09:52 |

that's a tragic story right there.
